With the NFL regular season officially over at 272 games, all eyes are now on the road to the Super Bowl and the start of playoff football.
Out of the initial 32 teams filled with aspirations of victory, only 14 remain to compete in 12 matches spanning three weeks. These games will determine the contenders for the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which will be awarded in February at the New Orleans championship.
This is gridiron at a higher level. Players give their all on the field while coaches dive into their playbooks, searching for that crucial extra play that could be the game changer.
This season, all the playoff teams won at least 10 games after a gap of 12 years. This shows that the level of competition is high. Moreover, with the stakes being so high in the ‘win or go home’ situation, we can expect some thrilling and unforgettable match-ups.
In this article, we will examine the participating teams, the playoff procedures, and the major discussions that will ultimately determine which team will compete in Super Bowl 59.
The Detroit Lions secured the top seed in the NFC by defeating the Minnesota Vikings in the season’s final game, qualifying them to join the Kansas City Chiefs in receiving a first-round bye.
The top four seeds are all division champions. This has sparked discussion about potentially changing the system, given that the Vikings, Washington Commanders, and Green Bay Packers have stronger records than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams yet are required to play their first games on the road.
AFC seedings (season record)
1. Chiefs (15-2) 2. Bills (13-4) 3. Ravens (12-5) 4. Texans (10-7) 5. Chargers (11-6) 6. Steelers (10-7) 7. Broncos (10-7)
NFC seedings
1. Lions (15-2) 2. Eagles (14-3) 3. Buccaneers (10-7) 4. Rams (10-7) 5. Vikings (14-3) 6. Commanders (12-5) 7. Packers (11-6)
Can you explain the process of the playoffs?
Essentially, both the Chiefs and Lions will skip Wildcard Weekend before competing on their home turf throughout the remainder of the playoffs.
In the Divisional Round, the lowest remaining seeds will be hosted by the pair, while the next highest seed will host the fourth and final team in the other game.
The final round sees a repetition of the previous pattern, where the highest remaining seed hosts the Conference Championships – essentially serving as the semi-finals for the Super Bowl.
